    Sustainability performance measurement : a preliminary classification framework of models and indicators

    In this position paper we focus on the diversity of sustainability measurements. Based on existing research on performance measurement, we propose a preliminary classification framework summarizing sustainability models and indicators. By describing illustrative examples, we claim that several models and indicators can be distinguished with their own peculiarities. Having such a framework is interesting for both academia and business to structure the range of models and indicators and to ultimately select the appropriate sustainability measurement approach.     Modeling styles in business process modeling

    Research on quality issues of business process models has recently begun to explore the process of creating process models. As a consequence, the question arises whether different ways of creating process models exist. In this vein, we observed 115 students engaged in the act of modeling, recording all their interactions with the modeling environment using a specialized tool. The recordings of process modeling were subsequently clustered. Results presented in this paper suggest the existence of three distinct modeling styles, exhibiting significantly different characteristics. We believe that this finding constitutes another building block toward a more comprehensive understanding of the process of process modeling that will ultimately enable us to support modelers in creating better business process models. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    © 2013, The Author(s).Business process models are an important means to design, analyze, implement, and control business processes. As with every type of conceptual model, a business process model has to meet certain syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic quality requirements to be of value. For many years, such quality aspects were investigated by centering on the properties of the model artifact itself. Only recently, the process of model creation is considered as a factor that influences the resulting model’s quality. Our work contributes to this stream of research and presents an explorative analysis of the process of process modeling (PPM). We report on two large-scale modeling sessions involving 115 students. In these sessions, the act of model creation, i.e., the PPM, was automatically recorded. We conducted a cluster analysis on this data and identified three distinct styles of modeling. Further, we investigated how both task- and modeler-specific factors influence particular aspects of those modeling styles. Based thereupon, we propose a model that captures our insights. It lays the foundations for future research that may unveil how high-quality process models can be established through better modeling support and modeling instruction

    The Effect of Modularity Representation and Presentation Medium on the Understandability of Business Process Models in BPMN

    Many factors influence the creation of understandable business process models for an appropriate audience. Understandability of process models becomes critical particularly when a process is complex and its model is large in structure. Using modularization to represent such models hierarchically (e.g. using sub-processes) is considered to contribute to the understandability of these models. To investigate this assumption, we conducted an experiment that involved 2 large-scale real-life business process models that were modeled using BPMN v2.0 (Business Process Model and Notation). Each process was modeled in 3 modularity forms: fully-flattened, flattened where activities are clustered using BPMN groups, and modularized using separately viewed BPMN sub-processes. The objective is to investigate if and how different forms of modularity representation in BPMN collaboration diagrams influence the understandability of process models. In addition to the forms of modularity representation, we also looked into the presentation medium (paper vs. computer) as a factor that potentially influences model comprehension. Sixty business practitioners from a large organization participated in the experiment. The results of our experiment indicate that for business practitioners, to optimally understand a BPMN model in the form of a collaboration diagram, it is best to present the model in a ‘fully-flattened’ fashion (without using collapsed sub-processes in BPMN) in the ‘paper’ format

    Mining processes in dentistry

    Business processes in dentistry are quickly evolving towards digital dentistry . This means that many steps in the dental process will increasingly deal with computerized information or computerized half products. A complicating factor in the improvement of process performance in dentistry, however, is the large number of independent dental professionals that are involved in the entire process. In order to reap the benefits of digital dentistry, it is essential to obtain an accurate view on the current processes in practice. In this paper, so called process mining techniques are applied in order to demonstrate that, based on automatically stored data, detailed process knowledge can be obtained on dental processes, e.g. it can be discovered how dental processes are actually executed. To this end, we analyze a real case of a private dental practice, which is responsible for the treatment of patients (diagnosis, placing of implants and the placement of the final restoration), and the dental lab that is responsible for the production of the final restoration. To determine the usefulness of process mining, the entire process has been investigated from three different perspectives: (1) the control-flow perspective, (2) the organizational perspective and (3) the performance perspective. The results clearly show that process mining is useful to gain a deep understanding of dental processes. Also, it becomes clear that dental process are rather complex, which require a considerable amount of flexibility. We argue that the introduction of workflow management technology is needed in order to make digital dentistry a success

    Towards an Entropy-based Analysis of Log Variability

    Rules, decisions, and workflows are intertwined components depicting the overall process. So far imperative workflow modelling languages have played the major role for the description and analysis of business processes. Despite their undoubted efficacy in representing sequential executions, they hide circumstantial information leading to the enactment of activities, and obscure the rationale behind the verification of requirements, dependencies, and goals. This workshop aimed at providing a platform for the discussion and introduction of new ideas related to the development of a holistic approach that encompasses all those aspects. The objective was to extend the reach of the business process management audience towards the decisions and rules community and increase the integration between different imperative, declarative and hybrid modelling perspectives. Out of the high-quality submitted manuscripts, three papers were accepted for publication, with an acceptance rate of 50%. They contributed to foster a fruitful discussion among the participants about the respective impact and the interplay of decision perspective and the process perspective

We use the Dynamic Condition Response (DCR) graphs notation for both choreographies and end-points. We define end-point projection as a restriction of DCR graphs and derive the condition for end-point projectability from the causal relationships of the graph. We illustrate the results with a running example of a Buyer-Seller-Shipper protocol. All the examples are available for simulation in the online DCR workbench at http://dcr.tools/forte19

A high-quality BP model is vital to the successful implementation, execution, and monitoring stages. Different works have evaluated BP models from a quality perspective. These works either used formal verification or a set of quality metrics. This paper adopts quality metric and targets models represented in Business Process Modeling and Notation (BPMN). It proposes an approach based on fuzzy logic along with a tool system developed under eclipse framework. The preliminary experimental evaluation of the proposed system shows encouraging results
